Repetition of a word or words at the beginning of two or more succesive verses. MLK and JFK both used this device in their speeches.

A figure of speech in which you use something associated with a thing to represent it. For example, We salute the FLAG. FLAG is a metonymy for our country, associated with it. Similar to synechdoche

Meter used by Shakespeare for his noble characters. Has 10 syllables, 5 feet. Like this: u'/u'/u'/u'/u'/

The feeling evoked by the word

A trite, tired expression. One in which you say the first word and the person listening can finish the phrase. Not considered good in writing; not fresh!

A story that has meaning on two levels. Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan is an excellent example. It tells the story of a man on his way to a special city here on earth. One can also see it as a story telling about a man's journey towards heaven.

A short, witty saying. Also could be called an aphorism or a quote.

A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole. Example, " I want your HAND in marriage." Do you only want the hand? No, you are using a figure of speech! Similar to metonymy.
