As a result, his work started a marine conservation movement and groups started to appear in different countries. Soon the world became aware of the destruction people were causing to marine habitats and animals like whales and dolphins. Without his work, we might not have some of the marine species that we do today. He set up a number of conservation groups, but his passion was the study of marine life and the discovery of new lives and new worlds under the ocean.
Today his foundation carries out important scientific work all over the world. The Cousteau Society, which he founded in 1974, has more than 50,000 members. By observing and monitoring the fragile marine ecosystems around the world, the Society has been able to educate different communities in ways of living in a harmonious way with their environment.

Soon the world became aware of the destruction people were causing to marine habitats and animals like whales and dolphins. Without his work, we might not have some of the marine species that we do today. He set up a number of conservation groups, but his passion was the study of marine life and the discovery of new lives and new worlds under the ocean.
Today his foundation carries out important scientific work all over the world. The Cousteau Society, which he founded in 1974, has more than 50,000 members. By observing and monitoring the fragile marine ecosystems around the world, the Society has been able to educate different communities in ways of living in a harmonious way with their environment.
It is dedicated to the protection and improvement of marine wildlife habitats around the world for future generations.
Cousteau died in 1997, aged 87. He had dedicated his life to marine research and conservation, and he left an incredibly successful legacy that continues today.
