When 17-year-old Andrew Cowan from the U.K. made a remote-controlled robot for an exam project, he had no idea how successful it would be.
Andrew invented the recovery robot to help firefighters and other emergency and rescue workers. The robot is designed to go into buildings that are falling down or on fire. It can help emergency workers find out if anyone is inside the building and needs help, without having to go into the building themselves.
The invention made such a good impression with the exam judges that Andrew was chosen to represent his country in a European contest for young scientists in Portugal in 2010.
Before Andrew was sent to Portugal, the robot had already won a number of prizes and sponsorship deals. A few months earlier, in March 2010, Andrew had been given the engineering and technology prize in a major national contest for science and engineering, as well as the Siemens prize. When creating this robot, Andrew received sponsorship for the project from several companies; he contacted the companies, who agreed to give him some of the parts he needed for the robot, such as the robot’s heat sensor. Andrew placed their company logos on the robot in return for sponsoring the project.
Andrew’s robot is fitted with firefighting equipment, plus a camera, and a sensor, and this caught the attention of some large companies. The electronics company Siemens is going to sponsor him to study at college, while other important electronics companies have offered him jobs for when he graduates from college.

1 Andrew Cowan’s robot was his school exam project.
