National Technical Institute for the Deaf - kindergarten - part-time work- American Sign Language - in the past
Teenagers Juan Chavez and Emilio Resendiz, who are both deaf, have been best friends since kindergarten. “Juan and I are closer than brothers,” signed Emilio. “We share the same experiences because we are deaf. Sometimes other kids who don’t know how to use sign language tease us. They make fun of us or mostly they ignore us.”
The language the boys use is American Sign Language. However, sign language is different in every country, and this can be another obstacle for deaf people. Emilio said that his parents had moved to the U.S. from Mexico because they had wanted to find a school for him where he could learn to sign. The two boys met on their first day at a kindergarten for deaf children. “We were in a class with about 25 other deaf children,” Emilio said. “Until my first day at school, I didn’t understand that I was deaf and that I was different. I just thought that people ignored me.”
They’ve had many challenges, but they’re finding life easier today than in the past. “In the past, deaf people couldn’t use a telephone, of course,” said Juan, “and that would make life very difficult. But today we can send texts, send e-mails, use instant messaging, and social networking sites. So things are a lot easier for deaf teenagers today than in the past.”
Despite their difficulties, the two boys have found part-time jobs in a local supermarket through an organization that helps find work for deaf teenagers. “The other workers have been very friendly,” signed Juan. “Some have even learned to sign. At first, I think we were very nervous, but we’ve learned a lot and we really enjoy it now.” Both boys agreed that their opportunity to work and earn some money like other teenagers had been really important to them. After high school, they hope to attend the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in New York City.
“We want to live a normal life. We want to have good jobs, get married, and have children, just like everyone else,” said Emilio. “Ultimately, I’d like to be a builder or carpenter. I like making things. And Juan wants to work with computers.”
