READING

Read the text and circle the correct answers.

Bargaining has been around for ages and is still very common in all parts of the world. In bargaining, the buyer and seller haggle over the price until they reach a happy medium or until the buyer gives up and looks for another seller.

The usual bargaining procedure goes like this: the buyer finds something they'd like to purchase, like foodstuffs or manufactured goods. After the buyer asks the price, the seller responds with an exorbitant amount, and the buyer shows shock and offers around 50 percent of the price. Now, it's the seller's turn to show shock and he lowers his price a bit, but ensuring he will still make a profit. Depending on the stamina of the participants, this could go on for a long period of time.

Bargaining is not only common in developing countries. The flea market is very common in almost every country, and it has bargaining as its basis. In the United States, flea markets are often put up on weekends, and people take their second-hand goods or items they have grown or made to sell. Another place bargaining is popular is in high-class hotels where travelers arrive and try to get discounts or upgrades on rooms. Internet auctions are similar to bargaining, since the seller puts up a price, and potential buyers bid by offering what they want to pay.
