"Jody"

Jody reined her horse in and stopped on the brow of the hill. She took her cowboy hat off for a moment and let the wind dry the sweat from her forehead. Her mare, Feisty, rested too, catching her breath.

The two stood there for a long moment, watching the sun in the sky. They didn't have long before it set. Home was still six miles away. Feisty stamped her feet, feeling Jody's tension. They must, absolutely must, reach home before the sun set.

Why did Jody feel tense?

"The Shepherd's Boy"
(a folktale by Aesop)

There was once a young shepherd boy who tended his sheep at the foot of a mountain, near a dark forest. It was rather lonely for him all day, so he thought of a plan to get a little company and some excitement.

He rushed down towards the village calling out "Wolf, wolf!" The villagers came out to meet him. Some of them stayed with him for a considerable time. This pleased the boy so much that a few days afterwards he tried the same trick, and again the villagers came to his help.

But shortly after this, a wolf actually did come out from the forest. He began to worry the sheep, and the boy of course cried out "Wolf, wolf," still louder than before. But this time the villagers, who had been fooled twice before, thought the boy was again deceiving them. Nobody stirred to come to his help, so the wolf made a good meal off the boy's flock.

The Test

“I know the biology test is tomorrow,” Erik groaned into the telephone. “But let’s go play basketball at the park anyway. I’m not in the mood to study.”

“Well, I’m not really in the mood to study, either,” answered Robert. “But if I don’t do well on this test, then I won’t be going to the park anytime soon. Besides, I really want to make the honor roll. I want to be a kid who does well at school.”

“I want to be a kid who makes it to the National Basketball Association,” replied Erik. “Why should I care how I do on a biology test?”

“For one thing,” answered Robert, “you can’t even play on the school team if you don’t get good grades. And for another, those basketball players have discipline! If you can’t put off playing basketball in order to make sure you do well on this test, you don’t have much discipline.”

“Okay, okay,” said Erik. “You’ve convinced me. Come over and we’ll study. My mom can help us, too. This weekend, though, we’re going to the park!”

“Sure thing,” answered Robert.

"Butterflies’ Joke"
(a Hopi folktale)

Long ago, lazy Coyote lived with his family on the Hopi mesas. They lived in a pueblo and worked together. It was a good family because most of the members worked hard. Everyone was expected to do their part for the family. Coyote, though, did not like work. He thought he could avoid doing his chores by sneaking off. One day when the family needed a lot of work done, Coyote went to the pond to hide. While there, he fell asleep. The butterflies noticed Coyote and thought they should play a trick on him. They all flew down to him. Each butterfly grabbed hold of Coyote and picked him up. While he was still asleep, they carried him all the way back to Coyote’s pueblo home. They set Coyote down on top of the pueblo. His family found him there still asleep. They were
mad. They woke Coyote up and told him to do his chores. Coyote had no idea how he got there and was sad he could not avoid working. Ever since, the butterflies have been laughing about the trick they played on Coyote.
